몬베베, and why a Korean fandom gets an official name

MONSTA X’s audience has a name: Monbebe, written 몬베베, taken from the French mon bébé. In Korea a fandom name is not something that drifts up from a message board — the agency announces it, usually within a year or two of debut and sometimes after collecting suggestions from fans, and from then on it works as official vocabulary. It goes on membership sign-up pages, into album thank-you notes, into the titles of fan meetings and tours. Most groups settle on an official fandom colour too. The effect is that a listener who buys in is enrolled in something with a membership number, not simply following an act.
