Palgongsan was designated as a provincial park on May 13, 1980, and became the 23rd national park on December 31, 2023. Palgongsan National Park spans the boundaries of five cities, counties, and districts: Dong-gu in Daegu Metropolitan City, Gunwi County, Gyeongsan City, Yeongcheon City, and Chilgok County in North Gyeongsang Province, covering a total area of 126.058 km².
Palgongsan is a mountain rising majestically like a folding screen, composed of granite, reaching 1,192.8 meters above sea level. It forms the core ecological axis of the Yeongnam region's highlands, where the Palgong Ridge and Yubong Ridge, branching off the Nakdong Ridge, converge. Centered around its main peak, Birobong (1,192.8m), Dongbong (1,167m) and Seobong (1,153m) stand shoulder to shoulder, encircling the northern edge of the Daegu Basin, located in the heart of the Yeongnam region, like a folding screen. It houses dozens of temples and hermitages, including the over-a-thousand-year-old Donghwasa Temple. Within its dense forests and clear streams flowing through several valleys, azaleas bloom in early spring, cherry blossoms in late spring, and magnolias in summer, creating a fresh and delicate beauty. In autumn, the vibrant foliage and broad-leaved trees, along with the winter snowy landscapes, form a realm of mystery.
The Eunhaesa Temple District of Palgongsan National Park is located in Yeongcheon City, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, where Eunhaesa Temple stands. This temple is the headquarters of the 10th District of the Jogye Order. Founded by National Preceptor Hyecheol in the first year of King Heondeok's reign (809) at Haeanpyeong, it was relocated here by Venerable Cheongyo in the first year of King Myeongjong's reign (1546) and renamed Eunhaesa. Eunhaesa features eight hermitages including Geojoam, Baekheungam, Unbuam, and Jungamam, along with the National Treasure Yeongsanjeon Hall and three designated Treasures. It is a scenic spot renowned for its rock formations like Geundeul Rock and Gigeuiam's Janggunsu, as well as Anheung Falls.
