Kindie, the scene next door to K-pop

The video’s own keywords tag it “Kindie”, a portmanteau of “Korean” and “indie” that listeners and music press use for a scene running parallel to K-pop rather than beneath it. Its geographic centre is Hongdae, the district around Hongik University in western Seoul, where small live clubs have hosted this kind of act since the 1990s. Kindie is not a sound — it covers folk, rock, electronic and quiet pop alike. It describes how a record reaches you: usually self-funded, self-released, and promoted through the artist’s own channels rather than a company’s.
