Korea has a separate word for band music

Korean listeners rarely file guitar bands under 가요 (gayo, mainstream pop). They use 밴드 음악 (baendeu eumak) or the older 인디 (indi), and the distinction is institutional rather than snobbish. Band acts historically came up through live clubs in Hongdae, west Seoul, playing paid gigs before any label involvement, rather than through agency trainee programmes. That route produced its own festivals, its own venues and its own charts. JANNABI, formed in the 2010s, belong to a generation that crossed from that circuit into national radio and streaming charts without abandoning the band format — a crossover Korean media still treats as newsworthy.
