Starship arrived through a distribution deal

Starship Entertainment was founded in 2008 by former SidusHQ staff, and for years it was better known for solo singers than for idol groups. What changed its position was ownership: LOEN Entertainment, the company behind the MelOn streaming service, took a controlling stake in 2014, and that chain of ownership now runs up to Kakao. In practice this means a Starship release sits inside a group that also owns Korea’s largest music platform and a distribution arm — the label is not negotiating for placement from the outside.
