Eight members, one nine-member plan

ATEEZ debuted in 2018 with eight members: Hongjoong, Seonghwa, Yunho, Yeosang, San, Mingi, Wooyoung and Jongho. That number is unusually specific in an industry where line-ups are assembled, not found. Korean agencies build groups from trainee pools over several years, and the final count is a commercial decision as much as an artistic one — enough members for vocal, rap and dance roles to be covered, few enough that each one gets camera time and a share of the revenue. Trainees who do not make the debut line-up are often held back for a later group, which is why agencies tend to launch acts in waves.
