Three sign languages, not one

Big Ocean’s members are deaf or hard of hearing, and the group has built that into its work rather than around it. Sign language sits inside the choreography, and not in a single form: the group has used Korean Sign Language, American Sign Language and International Sign. Signing is not universal — each country has its own, with its own grammar and vocabulary, so a group addressing audiences in several markets has to choose which one it is speaking. Hearing aids, cochlear implants and vibration cues do the work of holding timing.
