BABYMONSTER have released the video for ‘MOON’ on their own YouTube channel. The song belongs to the group’s third mini album, tagged in the official description as 춤 (CHOOM).

Why 춤 is written CHOOM

Korea has an official romanisation standard — Revised Romanisation, adopted by the Ministry of Culture in 2000 — and under its rules 춤 comes out as “chum”. The album is branded CHOOM instead. The doubled o does two jobs: it points an English speaker towards the vowel in “room”, which is close to correct, and it steps around the existing English word chum, which is not. Korean labels make this trade constantly, and the standard usually loses. Road signs and government paperwork follow the rules; record sleeves follow whatever a foreign reader will pronounce properly on the first attempt.
