조기유학, and the idol who grew up abroad

JENNIE spent roughly five childhood years at school in New Zealand before returning to Seoul in her early teens and entering YG as a trainee. That path has a name in Korean: 조기유학 (jogi yuhak), “early study abroad”, the practice of sending a school-age child overseas for an English-language education. It peaked among middle-class Korean families in the 1990s and 2000s, often with the mother relocating too. Agencies later found the returnees unusually useful — they handle foreign press, awards-show speeches and English lines without a translator, which is why so many groups have one.
