From AURUM, the third album by GUCKKASTEN — a band whose singer most Koreans know from television, and whose band most of them have never actually listened to.

Rock, and the television problem

Korean rock has spent twenty years in a strange position: respected, small, and largely invisible on the broadcast channels that decide what the country hears. What changed things for several bands was competitive singing programmes — masked-singer formats and cover competitions — which put rock vocalists in front of a mass audience performing other people’s songs. Guckkasten’s frontman became a household name that way. The band’s own catalogue, dense and psychedelic and nothing like a television cover, remains a separate proposition, and albums like this are where it lives.

Watching from outside Korea

A third album in a career this long tells you something on its own. Korean rock bands release slowly because they can only fund it slowly.
