삐그덕 is a sound word, and Korean has thousands of them

The title is onomatopoeia — the creak of something wooden shifting under weight, a door or a plank. Korean has an unusually large stock of these 의성어 and 의태어, sound- and manner-words, and they function as ordinary vocabulary rather than comic-book effects. They often come in pairs with a vowel swapped to change the scale of the thing described: a light creak against a heavier one.
