Dongdaemun Fashion Town (동대문 패션타운)
Seoul Dongdaemun Fashion Town Dongdaemun Fashion Town is a vast fashion district located in Euljiro, Jung-gu, Seoul, and is one of Korea’s largest clothing and fashion distribution hubs. The area uniquely combines traditional markets and modern shopping complexes, forming a vibrant ecosystem that covers everything from textile production to retail sales. Overview & Features Designated as a Tourist Special Zone in 2002, Dongdaemun Fashion Town has become a must-visit destination for both domestic and international visitors. The district offers a wide range of products including women’s wear, men’s wear, children’s clothing, leather goods, sportswear, underwear, shoes, accessories, and fashion materials. Many shops serve both wholesale and retail customers, catering to large-scale buyers as well as individual shoppers. The area operates as a complete fashion ecosystem, where design, textile production, and distribution are all concentrated in one place — allowing for fast adaptation to fashion trends. The entire district stays lively day and night, making it one of the few places in the world where nighttime shopping is part of the experience. Main Shopping Complexes Dongdaemun Fashion Town consists of various markets and modern malls, each with its own atmosphere and pricing style: DOOTA Mall, Hyundai Outlet, Lotte FitIn – Modern shopping malls that operate mainly on a fixed-price system, offering a comfortable and organized shopping environment. APM, Migliore, Hello apM – More traditional-style shopping complexes where bargaining is possible and competition between shops creates a lively marketplace. Traditional wholesale markets such as Sinpyeonghwa Market continue to play a key role, where many local designers and manufacturers operate directly from their own stalls. Operating hours vary by building, but many stores stay open late — some even throughout the night — earning Dongdaemun the nickname “the city that never sleeps.” Strengths Fast Fashion Hub – The close connection between design, manufacturing, and sales allows new fashion trends to appear in stores within days. Wide Price Range – From luxury pieces to budget-friendly options, there’s something for every shopper. Tourist-Friendly Atmosphere – The district has grown beyond a shopping destination into a cultural landmark that combines fashion, food, and entertainment. Challenges With the rapid growth of online shopping platforms, some offline stores have faced decreased foot traffic and higher vacancy rates. The district is undergoing modernization to adapt to new digital retail environments and improve convenience for visitors. Tips for Visitors Bargaining: Negotiation is common in traditional markets, but most modern malls have fixed prices. Payment: Some smaller shops may only accept cash or charge a small fee for card payments — carrying some cash is recommended. Operating Hours: Check the opening hours before visiting, as schedules vary between markets. Compare Before You Buy: Similar items may differ in quality or materials — take your time to compare. Wholesale & Retail Differences: Wholesale prices are typically lower but may require a minimum purchase quantity.

Dongdaemun Design Plaza (동대문디자인플라자 (DDP))
Seoul 281 Eulji-ro, Jung-gu, Seoul Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) has a meaning of Dream, Design, and Play. It holds various exhibitions, fashion shows, forums, conferences, and other domestic and international events. The building complex is divided into sections, which are named Allimteo, Beaumteo, Sallimteo, DDP Design Museum, Design Market & Eoullim Plaza, and Dongdaemun History & Culture Park. Designed by world-renowned architect Zaha Hadid, the building's exterior attracts the attention of many photographers with its delicate curves and bold shapes. Traveler's Guide Why visit: Dongdaemun Design Plaza is Zaha Hadid's silver spaceship in the middle of Seoul's 24-hour fashion district — a seamless aluminum landscape with no straight lines, holding exhibition halls, design shops, and event spaces. It anchors the city's design scene by day and becomes one of its favorite night-photography subjects after dark, when the curves light up and the LED rose garden blooms on the lawn. Come at night: the building, the rose garden, and the market towers around it are all better lit than by day. Check what is on — Seoul Fashion Week, design fairs, and blockbuster exhibitions rotate through constantly. The rooftop walking paths over the structure are free and open to anyone. Cross to the Dongdaemun market blocks for late-night shopping and the dak hanmari (whole chicken) alley for dinner. Good to know: Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station (Lines 2/4/5) connects directly underground. The plaza itself is free; exhibitions ticket separately.

Dongdaemun Dak Hanmari Alley (서울 동대문 닭한마리 골목)
Seoul 37-7, Jongno 5(o)-ga, Jongno-gu, Seoul Located near the Dongdaemun Market, Dongdaemun Dak Hanmari Alley gets its name from the restaurants serving dak hanmari (whole chicken soup) that line the alley. After the diners eat the meat, the broth is used to make kalguksu (noodle soup). Because the area is home to large-scale apparel and fashion material markets of the Dongdaemun Market, the district is always lively and bustling.

Deoksugung Palace (덕수궁)
Seoul 99 Sejong-daero, Jung-gu, Seoul Registered as a Historic Site, Deoksugung Palace was initially not a royal palace, but the residential home of Grand Prince Wolsan (1454-1488), the older brother of King Seongjong (1469-1494) of the Joseon dynasty. It wasn't until 1593 that the palace was used as a temporary palace of the royal family after their home was burned down during the Imjin War. King Seonjo also stayed at Deoksugung Palace after returning to the city. It became a proper palace when Gwanghaegun (1575-1641) ascended to the throne and gave this royal residence the name Gyeongungung Palace in 1611. Over the following decades, the palace alternated between being an official palace and a temporary residence. The name did not change officially to Deoksugung Palace, meaning the “palace of virtuous longevity,” until 1907. While the palace once encompassed a vast area with many buildings, the current palace grounds are just a small shadow of the prior splendor, with very few structures remaining. Traveler's Guide Why visit: Deoksugung is the palace where old Korea meets the modern age: alongside traditional halls stand Seokjojeon and other early-20th-century Western-style buildings from the Korean Empire period. Ringed by the famous stone-wall road and facing City Hall Plaza, it is the easiest palace to fold into a downtown Seoul day — and the only one regularly open into the evening. Catch the changing of the guard ceremony at Daehanmun Gate, held several times daily. Walk the Deoksugung stone-wall path (Jeongdong-gil) — one of Seoul's most loved strolls, especially in autumn. The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art has a branch inside the grounds. Night admission makes this the palace to visit after dinner, lit up against the high-rises. Good to know: Closed Mondays. City Hall Station (Lines 1/2) exits right at the gate. Allow 1–2 relaxed hours.
