Chungdong First Methodist Church (서울 정동교회)
Seoul 46, Jeongdong-gil, Jung-gu, Seoul Chungdong Church, having being completed in 1897, was the first Christian church that was built after the spread of Protestantism in Korea. The church was founded in 1887 as a small worship house under the name Bethel by Henry Gerhard Appenzeller, an American missionary. As the number of followers increased, the building underwent construction and officially became a church in 1895. Chungdong Church is the only remaining church building from the 19th century. The church was expanded once more in 1926, changing its from a cross-shaped building to a square one. The expansion was made by adding walls using bricks as not to damage the original building structure. The architecture was built in a simplified version of an American gothic house with arched window frames.

Cheonggyecheon Stream (청계천)
Seoul Changsin-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul Cheonggye Plaza was built on Sejong-ro Street, where Cheonggyecheon Stream begins. It was built between Dong-A Ilbo, the starting point of the Cheonggyecheon Stream restoration, and Sindap Railroad Bridge, with a length of 160 meters, a width of 50 meters, and a total area of 6,962 meters squared. The plaza is decorated with fountains, waterfalls, and walking paths. It was created as a place for meetings, harmony, peace, and unification, to celebrate the significance of the restoration of Cheonggyecheon Stream. A miniaturized version of Cheonggyecheon Stream is displayed here, providing an overview of the restored stream. There are also interpretive panels about the 22 bridges that cross Cheonggyecheon stream. Fountains of various shapes create beautiful scenery. Cheonggyecheon Stream is accessible from the square through stairs on the left and Cheonggye Trail on the right. There is also an 18-meter tunnel on the Cheonggye Trail, providing a unique experience for citizens entering Cheonggyecheon Stream from the plaza. After constructing Cheonggyecheon Plaza, the Seoul Metropolitan Government made it a car-free street on public holidays so that the plaza, waterside area, and streets could be used as cultural spaces for citizens to relax. A spectacular sight is created by three-color lights illuminating the fountains and a two-tiered waterfall coming down from a height of four meters. Palseokdam, made of eight stones from eight provinces in Korea, was laid along the waterfall's sides. Traveler's Guide Why visit: Cheonggyecheon is the stream that changed Seoul: an elevated highway torn down in 2005 to uncover 10.9 km of water running through the heart of downtown. Sunken below street level, it swaps traffic noise for the sound of water within a few steps — office workers eat lunch on its banks, herons fish beside skyscrapers, and at night the illuminated bridges turn it into the city's longest promenade. Start at Cheonggye Plaza near Gwanghwamun, where the spring sculpture and waterfall mark kilometer zero. Visit in November during the Seoul Lantern Festival, when the stream fills with giant glowing figures. Stepping stones cross the water at intervals — a small joy locals never outgrow. The stream links naturally to Gwangjang Market: walk 20 minutes east and finish with bindaetteok and mayak gimbap. Good to know: Free and open around the clock. The downtown stretch between Gwanghwamun and Dongdaemun is the most rewarding; after rain the lower path may close briefly.

Changuimun Gate - Jahamun Gate (창의문(자하문))
Seoul 118, Changuimun-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul Changuimun Gate was often called Jahamun Gate. It was one of four mini-gates in the north surrounding the walled city of Hanyang (Seoul) during the Joseon dynasty. After the closure of Sukjeongmun Gate, one of the four main gates, Changuimun Gate became a favorite north gate. Hence, people also called Changuimun the North Gate. It is the only gate among four mini gates that is still in its original state. Although it is small, almost 50m² in terms of size, it looks very firm and sturdy. While Dongsomun Gate, another of the four mini gates, is decorated with a phoenix, Changuimun Gate is adorned with a wooden chicken along its rafters. The reason behind the wooden chicken was that the chicken was believed to be the nemesis of the centipede. People believed that installing the wooden chicken was important to overcome the harmful spirit of the centipede.

Changgyeonggung Palace (창경궁)
Seoul 185 Changgyeonggung-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul Located in the heart of Seoul, Changgyeonggung Palace was originally built as Suganggung Palace by the 4th ruler of the Joseon dynasty, King Sejong (r.1418-1450), for his retiring father, King Taejong. It often served as residential quarters for queens and concubines. During the reign of King Seongjong (r.1469-1494), the palace was renovated and renamed to Changgyeonggung Palace. It later became a park with a zoo and a botanical garden during Japanese colonial rule. The palace grounds remained this way until 1983 when restoration of its old grace was completed. Traveler's Guide Why visit: Changgyeonggung is the quiet one — a palace of gardens, ponds, and open lawns where Seoulites come to walk rather than sightsee. Originally built for queens and dowagers, it carries a gentler, more domestic atmosphere than the grand ceremonial palaces, and its Great Greenhouse of 1909, Korea's first Western-style glasshouse, is a photographer's favorite. Come late afternoon and stay for the evening opening — the lantern-lit grounds are far less crowded than Gyeongbokgung. The white iron-and-glass Great Greenhouse is especially photogenic in winter and early spring. A footbridge connects directly to Changdeokgung, so the two palaces pair naturally. Spring cherry blossoms around Chundangji Pond are a local secret. Good to know: Closed Mondays. Hyehwa Station (Line 4) is a 10-minute walk. Allow 1–2 hours at an easy pace.

Changdeokgung Palace Complex [UNESCO World Heritage Site] (창…
Seoul 99 Yulgok-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul Changdeokgung Palace was the second royal villa built following the construction of Gyeongbokgung Palace in 1405. It was the principal palace for many kings of the Joseon dynasty, and is the most well-preserved of the five remaining royal Joseon palaces. The palace grounds are comprised of a public palace area, a royal family residence building, and the rear garden. Known as a place of rest for the kings, the rear garden boasts a gigantic tree that is over 300 years old, a small pond and a pavilion. The palace gained importance starting from the time of Seongjong, the 9th king of Joseon, when a number of kings began using it as a place of residence. Unfortunately, the palace was burned down by angry citizens in 1592 when the royal family fled their abode during the Imjin War. Thanks to Gwanghaegun, the palace was restored in 1611. Even today, it houses a number of cultural treasures, such as Injeongjeon Hall, Daejojeon Hall, Seonjeongjeon Hall, and Nakseonjae Hall. Changdeokgung Palace’s garden behind the inner hall, called the "Secret Garden," was constructed during the reign of King Taejong and served as a rest area for the royal family members. The garden had formerly been called Bugwon and Geumwon, but was renamed Biwon Garden, or Secret Garden, after King Gojong came into power. The garden was kept as natural as possible and was touched by human hands only when absolutely necessary. Buyongjeong Pavilion, Buyongji Pond, Juhamnu Pavilion, Eosumun Gate, Yeonghwadang Hall, Bullomun Gate, Aeryeonjeong Pavilion, and Yeongyeongdang Hall are some of the many attractions that occupy the garden. The most beautiful time to see the garden is during the fall when the autumn foliage is at its peak and the leaves have just started to fall. Though it has been treasured by Koreans for centuries, Changdeokgung Palace and its complex was recognized as a World Cultural Heritage site by the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Committee in December of 1997 during the committee meeting in Naples, Italy. Traveler's Guide Why visit: Changdeokgung is the palace connoisseurs choose. Built in harmony with the hillside rather than on a rigid axis, it is the best-preserved of the Joseon palaces and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997. Its crown jewel is the Huwon, the "Secret Garden" of pavilions, ponds, and ancient trees where kings retreated from court life. The Secret Garden can only be entered on a guided tour with a separate ticket — book ahead, slots sell out in peak season. Autumn foliage in the Huwon (late October–mid November) is one of the finest sights in Seoul. The palace connects to Changgyeonggung next door — one visit can cover both. Nearby Ikseon-dong and Insadong make an easy food-and-tea finish to the day. Good to know: Closed Mondays. Anguk Station (Line 3) is the closest stop. The general grounds take about an hour; add 90 minutes for the Secret Garden tour.
