2025.10.17　 Gyeonggido　

Gyeonggido Ponae-ri, Gimpo-si, Gyeonggi-do Munsusanseong Fortress was built on Munsusan Mountain in 1694, during the 20th year of the reign of King Sukjong, the 19th king of the Joseon dynasty. The fortress as designed to defend Gwanghwado Island from marine invasion. At the time, the fortress had north, west, and south gates, but they were destroyed in a fire during the Byeong-in Yangyo (1866). The north gate was restoryed in 1995 and the south gate in 2002. The fortress walls span 6 kilometers in length, 4 kilometers of which remain unrestored. Surrounded by beautiful scenery, the top of the fortress commands a spectacular view spanning from North Korea to the Hangang River inlet, and from Samgaksan Mountain to the sea off Incheon in the distance. It is often referred to as the Geumgangsan Mountain of Gimpo as it boasts superb scenery throughout all four seasons. The mountain is home to Munsusa Temple, established during the reign of Silla King Jinseong.

Gyeonggido 79, Jangneung-ro, Gimpo-si, Gyeonggi-do Jangneung Royal Tomb is located in Gimpo, Gyeonggi-do. This is the tomb for the parents of King Injo, the posthumously designated King Wonjong (1580-1619) and of his wife Queen Inheon (1578-1626). The tombs are small but well maintained.

Gimpo International Sculpture Park (김포국제조각공원)

Gyeonggido 38, Yonggang-ro 13beon-gil, Gimpo-si, Gyeonggi-do Gimpo Sculpture Park is situated in a large forest and is decorated with 30 sculptures: 14 by international artists and 16 by Korean artists. Since the site is located near the DMZ, the only divided country in the world, each sculpture expresses the overarching theme of unification. A favorite spot for weekend picnicking families and couples on dates, the park is expected to be included in a large tourist complex in the near future along with nearby Reports Park and the youth training center.

Gimpo Daemyeong Port (김포 대명항)

Gyeonggido 109, Daemyeonghang 1-ro, Daegot-myeon, Gimpo-si, Gyeonggi-do The piercing smell of salt, the energy of freshly caught fish, fishing boats returning from far out at sea, and people walking in and out of the fish market and raw fish restaurants - these are the scenes of Daemyeong Port in Daegot-myeon, Gimpo where the fresh vigor of life is vividly alive. It is located just 30 minutes from Gimpo Airport by car so it is close to Seoul. Fishermen and owners of fishing boats personally run raw fish restaurants so the prices of raw fish are about 20% cheaper here than at other ports, according to the people of Daemyeong Port. Raw fish restaurants that you first encounter at the entrance of the port have tanks filled with freshly caught fish, and fishing nets spread out here and there vividly show the unique characteristics of a port. As it is the only port on the coast of Ganghwado Island, you are able to fully enjoy the beautiful seascape. The port is also receiving a great deal of attention both locally and nationwide thanks to the Daemyeong Type 2 Fishery Harbor project and the Pungeoje Festival. In 2001, Daemyeong Port was selected as one of the "7 Winter Seas recommended by the Korea Tourism Organization" for its beautiful seascape and flavors of a traditional port. Facing Ganghwado across Ganghwa Strait, Daemyeong Port is not as busy with tourists as Sorae Port or Yeonan Pier and boasts quiet and affectionate scenes of a fishing village. Nearby lies Deokpojin Fort, which is a historical site where our ancestors in the late Joseon Dynasty fought against foreign forces.

Gimje Munsusa Temple (문수사(김제))

Jeollabukdo 158, Hwangsan 5-gil, Gimje-si, Jeonbuk-do Munsusa Temple, located in Hwangsan-dong, Gimje, is a branch temple of Geumsansa Temple. The temple is located in the heart of nature atop Bonghwangsan Mountain (alt. 100 meters), which is surrounded by the seemingly endless Mangyeong Plains. The temple was built by the great monk Hyedeok Seonsa in the 25th year of King Mu of Baekje after he was visited in his dreams by Munsu Bosal (a Buddhist Saint). The temple was named ‘Munsu’ after ‘Munsugol,’ the original name of the neighborhood in which the temple is located. In front of the temple stands an ancient zelkova tree whose giant girth measures well over 5 meters. The tree, which is called gwimok (meaning holy, miraculous tree), was recently designated a specially protected tree and is now the focus of preservation efforts. Every January 14th (according to the lunar calendar), local lovernment of Gimje holds a sacred ritual for the tree while the temple holds a ritual to honor the mountain spirit.

Gimhae Astronomical Observatory (김해천문대)

Gyeongsangnamdo 254, Gaya thema-gil, Gimhae-si, Gyeongsangnam-do Gimhae Astronomical Observatory opened on February 1, 2002 as part of the Millennium Commemorative Project that started in December 1998. It was built to satisfy the general public’s curiosity about the universe and celestial bodies, inspire young people, and give everyone a unique, memorable experience. The observatory is shaped like an egg, in memory of the legend of King Kim Suro, the founder of the Garak Kingdom, according to which the king was born from an egg. It is said that the queen of King Suro, Heo Hwang-ok, was a princess from the Indian country of Ayuta. Since sophisticated navigation equipment had yet to be invented, it can be assumed that she found her way to the Garak Kingdom by following the stars. It is also said that a prince of the Garak Kingdom built an observatory on the highest point of a mud fortress in Jinrye in order to make astronomical observations. The place is still referred to as Bibidan, which means a place to watch the stars. These historical facts indicate the stars were very important to the Gaya, an ancient kingdom established mainly in the Gimhae area. The peak of Bunseongsan Mountain, where the observatory is located, offers sweeping views of the entire area of Gimhae. The night sky of Gimhae offers a breathtaking sight.

Geunpodonggul Cave (근포동굴)

Chungcheongbukdo 1316 Cheongpungho-ro, Geumseong-myeon, Jecheon-si, Chungcheongbuk-do Geumwolbong Peak is a unique, small rocky mountain distinguished by its diverse shapes that blend a touch of artificiality with natural beauty. This site, initially a limestone mine, unveiled its striking rock formations in 1993. The resemblance of these rocks to the Manmulsang (Ten Thousand Rocks) of North Korea's Geumgangsan Mountain earned it the nickname "Little Geumgangsan Mountain." It was later officially renamed Geumwolbong Peak.

Its makgeolli (unrefined rice wine), with a 100-year tradition, is made from top-quality eco-friendly rice grown on the island. The brewery is committed to making science-based premium rice wine. In 2021, the brewery was the first on the island to obtain a license for brewing local specialty wine (unrefined and refined rice wine) with the goal of promoting makgeolli globally, while using local ingredients. Notably, the brewery's packaging, made by upcycling rice sacks, has grabbed much attention.

Geumneung Beach (금능해수욕장)

The white sandy beach where the bottom of the shallow, blue water is clearly seen creates an illusion that one can easily walk all the way to Biyangdo.Geumneung Beach is directly connected to Hyeopjae Beach, another popular tourist spot on the west side of Jeju Island. However, despite the common charming elements the two beaches share, Geumneung Beach sees a relatively small number of visitors in comparison, so it exudes a more relaxing vibe. Moreover, the beach and the parking lot are directly connected, making it more convenient to move baggage and other belongings. The newly built showers supply warm water, which is another advantge of the beach. It is recommended to visit the beach during the hours of ebb tide. Once the sea water recedes afar, a vast, beautiful sandy beach appears. The water is shallow in many parts where natural swimming pools are formed, allowing little children to be able to play safely.

Geumnam Egret Habitat (금남 백로 서식지)

Sejong 45-13, Gamseong-gil, Geumnam-myeon, Sejong-si The Egret Habitat in Gamgseong-ri covers a small mountain located in Yuseong-gu District. Existing since the Joseon dynasty era, the habitat is home to common herons and cattle egrets. Up to 5,000 birds have been observed at one time. The best time to visit the habitat and see the egrets is between April and May.
